Banner Day for the Oregon Project at the Boston Marathon

Posted on April 19 2017

The 121st Boston Marathon proved to be a great day for the Nike Oregon Project. The team took 3 of the 6 podium places led by Galen Rupp's 2nd place finish. Suguru Osako and Jordan Hasay both placed 3rd in their debut marathons.

In his 3rd Marathon Galen ran 2:09.37, 21 seconds behind winner Geoffrey Kirui. Galen was disappointed not to win but very happy considering he didn't even know he would be able to run two weeks ago after a 3 month battle with plantar fascitis.  Both Galen and Alberto are very excited to see what he can do with a full healthy build up to his next marathon.

Jordan Hasay entered her first marathon as a bit of a wildcard.  Her recent performances have been excellent, led by her 67:55 Half Marathon in Prague two weeks ago.  But fast half marathoners don't always have the same success at the Marathon distance.  Jordan put that question to bed when she finished 3rd on Monday in 2:23.00.  The time is the fastest debut by an American women ever, by almost 3 minutes.

Suguru Osako ran 2:10.28 to finish 3rd and become the first Japanese athlete to make the podium in 30 years.  Osako battled hard all day in his first marathon and was rewarded with an incredible result.  Osako commented, “I’ve never experienced a race so tough."

All 3 athletes will take some much deserved time off before heading to altitude camp in Utah.  The 121st Boston Marathon was a day the Oregon Project won't soon forget.
