The Oregon Project has arrived in Sacramento for the 2017 US Championships. Several Oregon Project track athletes will be competing in the 100 degree California heat.
On Thursday Galen Rupp will try to win his 9th straight 10,000m US final. This will most likely also serve as Galens last US Championship on the track as he makes the transition to the Marathon. This could also serve as his toughest 10K yet as he has had a very short buildup for the race only recently resuming training following the Boston Marathon where he finished 2nd. The 10K starts at 10:09PM Pacific.
Friday will serve as the final for the Men's and Women' 5,000m. Shannon Rowbury will start things off at 8:46PM Pacific. The American Record Holder in both the 5K and the 1500m will look to win her first outdoor 5K title and first outdoor title since winning the 1500m title in 2009. Eric Jenkins will be running the Men's 5K final at 9:10PM. Eric will be looking to make his first US team as he has come agonizingly close the last two years finishing just off the team in 4th place. Eric comes into Sacramento after an amazing Winter and Spring where he was undefeated in the 1500 and ran a 13:05 for the 5K indoors.
Saturday will be the final day of competition for the Oregon Project as the 1500m finals go off, assuming athletes qualify after Thursday nights prelims. At 2:12PM Shannon Rowbury will compete in the finals. She will be doubling back after the 5K final on Friday night so making this team will be quite the challenge but one the American Record holder is capable of. At 2:40PM Olympic Gold Medalist Matthew Centrowitz will be running the 1500m final. Matthew's buildup hasn't been ideal but he has a 3:33.41 seasons best a little over a month ago to fall back on.
